08:03 pm - every day is a tiny apocalypse Went to Costco today. They were out of rice. Not low, not rationing -- out. It's kind of easy to dismiss this as Not A Big Deal, because there were still shelves upon shelves of Go-Gurt and Capri Sun and Campbell's cream of mushroom, with just one significant gap. (Actually there was no literal gap; the staff hustled to compensate for the space as much as possible.) But. No rice is a big deal. A very big deal, especially considering that it's not just rice from one region that's gone, it's all of it.
Fiesta, which gets its stuff primarily from local suppliers, was low on rice but not out. They are more likely to be able to resupply quickly, so now I'm sitting on a hundred pounds of long-grain white as well as fifty of pinto beans, several boxes of dry milk, a bunch of peanut butter, a couple gallons of canola oil and a lot of vegetable bouillon cubes. I feel bad knowing that some poor Mexican mama may have a slightly harder time finding rice because of me, but honestly, I really didn't know what else to do. Having faith that things will work out in the end just hasn't gone so good, so far.
(I'm keeping all my apocalypse posts unlocked from here on out.)
